Tampines today is a far cry from its early days as a fishing village known for its sand quarries,
orchards and coconut plantations. Tampines has the distinction of being the first town in Singapore
to be developed on a precinct concept in 1979 - thereby promoting neighbourliness and a sense of
belonging among residents.

Hence, despite its transformation into a modern and self-contained town,
the "gotong royong" or self-help in the early days is still very much evident now, where
residents both young and old take part in activities such as the regular cleaning and pruning of plants.
It is this social responsibility spirit among residents that helps us in maintaining a cleaner and
better living environment for all of us.
